Phlebotomy Certification

Training Course

The primary function of a phlebotomist is to obtain patient blood specimens by venipuncture or microtechniques. The phlebotomist aids in the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens, and may be involved with patient data entry.

A phlebotomist draws blood for transfusions, donations and research. This course provides instruction in the skills needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques.

Although, depending on affiliate clinical sites, once students have satisfactorily completed the classroom portion, clinical rotations will be assigned. Upon completion of all aspects of this course, students will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam.
