Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a public education program that introduces participants to risk factors and warning signs of mental illnesses, builds understanding of their impact, and gives an overview of common supports. This 8-hour course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to offer initial help in a mental health crisis and connect persons to the appropriate care.

Dr. Bernard is an Associate Professor and Interim Chair of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at East Tennessee State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Family Studies from Purdue University, and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of Tennessee. She is a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. She is a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. She is a Leave No Trace Master Educator, a Trauma Informed Care Trainer, and a Mental Health First Aid trainer. She is also the immediate past president of the Southeastern Council for Family Relations. Her research centers on the association between the family of origin and human service providers, specifically, the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). She recently completed Mental Health First Aid-Pediatrics and is an educator in that area.

A certificate for 0.8 CEUs (Continuing Education Units) is available for $25.00. You will need to request this at time of registration under Optional Fees.
